MIDWEST SCARF

The lovely folks at XRX-Inc. make sure everyone attending the Student Banquet receives a prize by the end of the evening.  My prize was a small scarf kit from Unique Kolours, Colinette yarn.  Rather than follow the directions, I made up my own scarf which I knit in an afternoon.  It’s a fun small project.

Designed by:  Maureen Mason-Jamieson, 108 Brooklyn Ave., Toronto, ON, Canada, M4M 2X5, (416) 466-0401, maureen@kinverknits.com  Copyright 2006.  Visit my website at www.kinverknits.com

Finished Size:  3.5” wide x 36” long (excluding fringe)

Materials:  25 g each of Colinette Tao, color Coral Reef, (MC) and Collinette Parisienne, color Jamboree (CC), size 4.5 mm (US 7) needles.

Cast on 14 sts with MC.

Set up row:  *(K 3, knit 2 together, yarn over) twice, k 4.

Rows 1-6:  With MC, knit.  Do not cut yarn.  Join CC.

Rows 7-12:  With CC, knit.

Continue alternating 6 knit rows of MC and 6 knit rows of CC, carrying color not in use up the side, until you have 14 repeats of Rows 1-12.  Do not cut CC.

Repeat Rows 1-6 once more.

Next row, (k 4, drop next st down to yarn over stitch at cast on edge) twice, k 4.  To bind off, bind off all stitches on next row, taking yarn LOOSELY over the dropped stitch edge as you bind it off.  Cut MC leaving a 3” tail.

Fur Stitch edge:  With Wrong Side of work facing you and 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook, use 2 strands of CC for fur stitch edging.  Hint:  pull from center of ball and use outer yarn end at the same time.  You’ll work one fur stitch for every two rows of knitting along the long edge where you carried the “yarn not in use” up the side.

Insert hook from front to back at corner, yarn over hook (yoh), pull loop through. *Insert hook from front to back in next space, take yarn over index finger held at back of work to make a loop.  Twist hook to  grab both strands of loop and pull through to front of work (2 loops on hook), yoh, pull loop through both loops on hook.  Repeat from * for edging.  Try to keep fringe loops the same length.  To fasten off, cut CC leaving 3” tail and draw through the last loop on hook.

Spread scarf on a smooth, flat surface, spreading the dropped stitch “bars” so they open up and smoothing fur stitch fringe flat.  Mist lightly with tepid water until completely dry.  Enjoy!
