This scarf was designed on a whim (hence the name!) using yarn I bought in New Orleans. It's fast, easy to knit, and an elegant accent when nonchalantly flung over your shoulder. Level: Beginner.

Materials: Trendsetter Yarns "Charm", 77% polyester/23 % polyamide tactel, 20 grams, 86 m, Color 103, made in Italy - 2 balls. Similar lace or fingering weight fancy yarns may be substituted. Needles - 5.5 mm (US 9).

Size: 60" long x 4-1/2" wide, including tassels.

Gauge: 18 sts, 24 rows = 4" (10 cm). Gauge is not too important for this scarf -- overall size may be slightly larger or smaller. The thing to remember is to knit the yarn with a larger needle than you would usually use for that weight. This creates a scarf that drapes nicely. To accurately judge whether you are using the correct size needle for your chosen yarn, knit a swatch at least 5" square. If knitting appears too loose, go down a needle size or two; if knitting appears too tight and doesn't drape well, try increasing the size of needle.

Abbreviations: k - knit, k 2 tog - knit two stitches together creating a single, right-leaning decrease.

Tassels: Make 2. Cut four 8" lengths of yarn and set aside. For tassel, wind yarn around a piece of 4" cardboard 25 times. Slip 8" length of yarn under strands lying on one short end of carfboard and knot tightly. Cut yarn ends at other short side. Take another 8" length of yarn and wind it tightly around tassel 1/2" from folded end to form tassel head. Knot tightly and bury yarn ends in tassel. Set tassels aside.

Cast on 3 stitches.
Row 1: K 1, k 1 front and back to increase one stitch, k to end.
Row 2: Knit.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you have 21 stitches on the needle. Then knit for 40" or until scarf is 6" short of desired length.

To decrease: *K until 3 stitches remain on the needle, k 2 tog, k 1. Knit the next row with no decreases. Repeat from * until 3 stitches are left. Knit 3 sts together. Bind off remaining stitch.

Sew one tassel to each pointed end of scarf. Weave in any stray yarn ends. Since the scarf is garter stitch based, it won't need much blocking. Stretch it out on a towel and mist lightly. When it's completely dry, fling it about your neck in a bon vivant fashion and enjoy!
