Knitting Haiku :
Japanese-style knitting poetry

These poems were written at Camp Stitches New York by Maureen's students in her "Japanese Knitting Techniques" workshop. They are haiku's, which follow the form:

first line: 5 syllables
second line: 7 syllables
third line: 5 syllables

If you feel inspired, please send your own haiku to Maureen and we'll post it here.

Specific to Camp Stitches New York held at the White Eagle Conference Center:

What you learn here will
Add a new dimension to
Your own unique style.

Sit and think and knit.
Contemplative creation:
White Eagle moment.

During this weekend
You will learn why Japanese
Knitting is so cool.

General Knitting:
Needles like chopsticks:
They make it possible to
Bend yarn to your will.
Luscious soft draping;
Curves falling from your needles
Knit from new angles.
A sweater takes shape:
Needles stirring soft fibers;
Yarn curling to life.
See this cardboard sign:
"Will write poetry for yarn".
Haiku vagabond.
(written by Ann)
Determination:
If I didn’t have a chair
I would knit standing.
(written by Cheryl)
Needles like willows
Sway, colors, gentle breezes
Off flows warmth, comfort.
(written by Irene)

About Japanese Knitting Techniques (general):
Garments have new life
When you add to your skill set
Techniques from Japan.
You may observe a
Sense of the Pacific Rim
Inside these stitches.
Yarn, Needles, vision.
Look across the Pacific:
They knit in Japan.
Many benefits,
If you apply Japanese
Techniques to your yarn.
(written by Ginger)

See a difference:
Use these Japanese stitches
Adventurously.

Listen, watch, and learn
To knit a silk kimono
The Japanese way.

Sweaters are special
Japanese finishing can
Make each one stand out.

Secrets from Japan
Bring to your knitting basket
Balance and beauty.

About Japanese Knitting Techniques (specific):
Knitting, like walking,
Gets you where you want to go
Even with short rows.
(written by Pearl)
Japanese short rows;
Invisible transitions:
We can make these now.
Texture, color, lace:
Three-needle bind-off gives seams
A Japanese touch.
(written by Audrey)

To pick up stitches
Choose a way that is discreet.
Hand-made, not home-made.
(written by Alexandra)

Hidden edge stitches:
Your button bands and collars
Look professional
Short row buttonholes:
Place them on the vertical
For smoother closure.
Make your stitches roll
To achieve a neat finish:
Tubular bind-off.
(written by Carla)

Time your decisions
Cast on provisionally
Finish at the end.

Bobbles will stand out
When you use a crochet hook
In a knitted row.

Japanese patterns:
No need to know the language
To figure them out.
