Toronto Downtown Knit Collective - I've belonged to the DKC for 4 years and it's been wonderful to be part of this knitting community. The DKC is a teaching guild which meets monthly for 10 months of the year. Past speakers include Sally Melville, Lucy Neatby, and Shirley Scott. DKC members are enthusiastic in sharing ideas and techniques with each other and the "show and tell" segment of the meeting is always a favourite. The DKC June Frolic is a "not-to-be-missed" event for knitters in the area. The list of classes grows every year and retailers gather from all over southern Ontario to ensure no one will be short of knitting projects over the summer months. Community involvement is encouraged at the DKC as well. Member regularly contribute knitting projects and supplies to several local agencies. Horst Schulz site - In October 2000, the DKC was pleased to present an evening talk and 1 ½ day workshop with Horst Schulz. Horst very kindly permitted Victor Kass to create this website to commemorate the event. The site showcases the many wonderful sweaters and swatches Horst and his students have created. Mod Knit List - This list is for modular knitting enthusiasts of all types. Katherine Matthews has done an excellent job of setting up and maintaining this list which has expanded to include a gallery of photos of members designs and on-line classes. Questions are answered cheerfully and enthusiastically by the list members and it is always inspiring to see what people create. Intarsia Pillow Lesson - Last year I wrote this on-line lesson for the modknit list. You'll learn the basics about knitting intarsia mitered squares while creating a pillow. There's also some advanced information for those already familiar with the basics and fancy intarsia slipstitch edging directions.
Businesses: www.applelaine.com - Cynthia Jackson offers a beautiful selection of hand-dyed and hand painted yarns in a variety of weights and fibers. She also carries some kits and knitting accessories. I bought some fingering weight wool/silk blend in a colour blend called "Old Friends" to knit a scarf and it feels wonderful on the hands and, of course, around my neck. The colours are scrumptious. www.fiddlesticksknitting.com - Dorothy Siemens and I are both members of Toronto's Downtown Knit Collective knitting guild. Dorothy is an amazing knitter who will tackle most anything, but has a special talent for designing lace. Her on-line company, Fiddlesticks Knitting, focuses on lace shawls, wraps, yarns, and lace parphenalia. Her patterns are clear and easy to follow for even a novice lace knitter. Dorothy says there should be a shawl in everyone's life and she's designed shawls that will tempt everyone from beginners to expert lace knitters. Knit 'N Style Magazine Online - Knitting magazines are always fun, and Knit 'N Style is one of my favourites. It's always on top of the latest trends and yarns. www.needleartsbookshop.com - Marsha White carries an extensive listing of knitting books -- many of which now reside on my bookshelves! She also stocks books on cross-stitch, needlepoint, and crochet. Service is quick and cheerful and Marsha is very knowledgable about all aspects of knitting. The Needlearts Book Shop is primarily a mail order business but Marsha also travels to several shows in the area. For a complete listing of events she will be attending and the books (ooh, the books!) she carries, check out her webpage. Brenda Zuk's website is wonderful to visit for original hand knit patterns in lace, texture and intarsia. She specializes in nature and animal motifs. Her lace shawls are particularly innovative and beautiful. |
